SCA Awards 2015. WINNER: CIVIC ARCHITECTURE
Léogâne Civic Centre
by Stephanie Jazmines, University of Notre Dame School of Architecture
Professor: Fr. Richard Bullene, C.S.C.
In 2010, a tragic 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti. The epicenter, Léogâne, was destroyed and 30,000 people died. With tremendous need and a challenging environment, the project was developed as a realistic proposal for a civic center, facing the existing town square. With support from the ND Haiti program, knowledge of local materials and building construction methods were used extensively. As Haitians were distrustful not only of structures, but also of government itself, there needed to be a level of openness and understanding. Addressing the existing fabric, permeability, and relationships between various programs, this exemplifies possibilities within the Haitians’ own means. #studentsforclassicalarchitecture #classical #architecture #haiti #civic #civicarchitecture #watercolor #watercolorrendering #rendering #architecturedrawing #drawing #draft
