LOW CARB DIETS ARE NOT MAGIC! They work by creating a calorie deficit, not by low insulin sorcery. Non low carb diets equal in calories and protein produce the SAME fat loss and health benefits (blood lipids, cholesterol, fasting insulin, glucose, etc) as low carb diets!!! That being said, if you enjoy low carb and it allows you to better adhere to your caloric deficit then it probably is the best diet for you. But that doesn’t make it the best diet for everyone! Fish oil is often an overlooked supplement in the fitness world, but omega fatty acids play a major role in general health, weight loss, and even muscle building!

Fish oil will supply your body with essential omega-3 fatty acids, these are fats that are necessary for optimal cellular function but cannot be produced by the body, so, they must be consumed.

Some of the biggest, and most well know benefits of fish oils are, increased cardiovascular health, increase HDL (good) cholesterol, increased joint health, decreased inflammation, and increased brain health/cognitive function.

Not only will Fish oil help you stay healthy but they will also help you lose fat, in multiple ways. The first way that omega-3's will help you get lean/stay lean is that they increase the oxidation of fat in the mitochondria of the fat cell. Second is that these fatty acids can help to increase insulin sensitivity. Fish oils also show promise in decreasing cortisol, and having an anti-catabolic effect which will help maintain lean body mass.

The aforementioned anti-catabolic effect will also help in a major way with maintaining muscle mass. Not only do they have a muscle sparing effect but with omega-fatty acids in the body but they may help you build muscle as well. As they show promise in increasing the rate of muscle protein synthesis. One study shows a 30% increase in Mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) activation, mTOR is basically the master regulator of muscle protein synthesis. Aside from helping with the building of muscle by decreasing catabolism and increasing anabolism a diet rich in healthy fats will promote optimal hormone production/metabolization helping your body produce more testosterone and growth hormone.

I recommend between 2-4g of high quality fish oil per day with approximately a 3:2 ratio of EPA to DHA.
