Sit down, relax, and read:
For anybody out there who, like me, worries about the lack of morals, ethics and overall selfishness of today's youth for a very good reason... I was just going to CVS here in Downtown LA right across the street from my Whole Foods store. Two men walked in together, one maybe 45 or so, the other, early 20s, wearing a Thrasher (skateboard magazine) sweatshirt. As they passed by me the younger man said to older man, "pick out whatever you want, so long as it will fill you up." I looked at the older man again and recognized him as one of the many, many homeless people who wanders the streets in Downtown LA asking for money or food. Hundreds if not thousands of people passing by everyday without a second glance or even a word of acknowledgement that that person even exists. I know this for a fact because I'm often guilty of it myself - when you come across it every day, every single day - you become inured to it and you get to the point where you just seem to...unsee it.
Anyway, the two men walked the aisles for about 10 minutes, the older one picking up boxes of cereal and even a small bottle of milk. I overheard him ask the younger man once, "is this okay, too?" To which the younger man acknowledged that it was.
I waited off to the side until they had checked out, leaned over and said to the young man, while choking back tears, "you've made your parents very proud today." Corny, I know but I was at a loss at what else to say to him without embarrassing him. He actually seemed a little astonished that I said anything and just kind of stuttered "thank you" and that was that.
So for anyone out there like who, like me, worries about the lack of morals, ethics and overall selfishness of today's youth...well, we have one less youth to worry about.
