The Russo-Georgian war lasted 5 days, from August 7 to August 12
.
Georgians (above picture) lost 180 KIA and many more wounded. Russian losses were 1/3 of that
.
Georgia lost control over South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Both are still under Russian occupation

The attack on Pearl Harbor led to an invasion scare in California there multiple scares and it is hard to accurately convey the fears of a future mainland attack. In the ensuing hysteria rumors began to spread that the Japanese were being aided by Japanese American the result was that in late 1941 and early 1942 the United States began to round up Japanese Americans and transport them to internment detention camps. To prevent suspected traitors from influencing the outcome of the war. In hindsight we know that there was never a possibility of an invasion campaign but for the Japanese they were forced to give away or sell their property at far below market value.

Many of the ships that were sunk during the attack were sunk in very shallow water, they were later raised, refitted and commissioned playing an important role in the later Pacific Campaign. The reason that the air craft carriers survived was that the Japanese aircrafts lacked the fuel needed to search out and destroy them after the attack. The United States submarines also had not been present at Pearl Harbor and survived. The United States Submarine Fleet came to play the same role against Japanese shipping as the German U-boats did to British shipping during world war one. There does exist a controversy with many holding that Franklin Roosevelt welcomed a Japanese attack as both a way to enter World War Two and kill isolationist policies.
It is true that the attack silenced isolationists at once with many former isolationists now avowing to fight the Japanese to the end. Germany and Japan were allies and within two days of the attack the Germans declared war on the United States. This solved a major problem for Roosevelt as the American population would have wanted to fight the Japanese but not the Germans. From the beginning it was clear that Germany was going to be the bigger threat, she had a bigger population, was more industrialized.

It was amazing in many respects to set the great Japanese Fleet in complete radio silence undetected across the vast Pacific Ocean close enough to launch Hawaii to launch Torpedo Planes and Bombers on Pearl Harbor. The Surprise was almost complete as the Attack began on Sunday 7th December 1941. The Japanese Planes sank 18 United States war ships including the Battle ship the USS Arizona which sank with more than 1,000 sailors on board and the USS Oklahoma. The aircraft carriers and submarines the vessels that were to prove decisive in the Pacific Theater of World War Two were not harmed during the attack. The United States Navy was able to create a highly effective fighting force despite the attack.

The Japanese understood that they would have to win using an overwhelming attack on the United States. They needed the war or hostilities to end quickly if the war dragged on or raged for too long they would be out produced by the United States. Who had the ability to vastly out produce their capabilities, they crucially miscalculated, the United States did the exact opposite popular opinion became aroused and enflamed. Pearl Harbor resulted in outrage the last thing on everyone I the republic mind was withdrawal from the Pacific. A war to uttermost that would led to the compete defeat of Japan. The attack on Pearl Harbor was a setback but not in any way decisive and it was an audacious move to make.

“Band of Brothers” – June 7th, 1944. ‘Easy Company,’ 2nd Battalion of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, at Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, Normandy. Easy Company paratrooper Forrest Guth knew he would witness history when he jumped into France on D-Day, so he carried a camera borrowed from his boyhood friend and fellow paratrooper, Roderick Strohl.

On June 7th, 1944, D+1, Forrest and his comrades entered Sainte-Marie-du-Mont while searching for Easy Company. Forrest thought the town’s WWI memorial would make a good backdrop. His comrade, Walter Gordon, agreed to snap a photo and Forrest let several 4th ID soldiers, fresh from Utah Beach, join them for a picture the world would one day treasure. ________________________________________________________ What are your thoughts on the Band of Brother's series?

🇺🇸 A few minutes later, 28 of the 32 buoyant Sherman DD tanks of the 70th US Tank Battalion reached the coast and attacked the remaining German defenses. The other four tanks were lost when their landing craft ran to a mine and sank. The effective tank support of the first landing wave was another significant difference from the landing on Omaha Beach and also helped to keep the Allied losses low. Unlike the Omaha stretch of beach, the tanks were dropped from the DropShip only three kilometers off the coast, and were able to cope with the calmer sea swells near the coast.

This was on of the last trains to shuttle between #NorthKorea and #SouthKorea before the start of the #KoreanWar. It was left abandoned after the demarcation and the establishment of the #DemilitarizedZone and left to rust for almost 60 years until the south removed it and placed it as an exhibit in #ImjingakPark, a site built for South Koreans to gather in hopes to reunite with relatives across the border. #History #BulletHoles #TargetPractice #DMZ #WarHistory #BlackAndWhite #TouristEveryday #TravelAsia #IgersKorea #Wanderings #Olympics2018
