Yep they are serious,
About looking after themselves 🤙🏽 Pull up to training,
Throw on Paddle gears,
Maybe have a quick hamstring stretch
Then get in the waka and go 🧐 Hmmmm

Know any other sports that do that?

I’ve even heard paddlers say
“Well those top crews don’t warm up”, 🤣🤣🤣 Of course they do!

You just don’t see them because they mostly do it away from everyone so they can focus on the job and plan for the race.

If you really want to be your best,
You need to start acting like it.

Don’t wait around to be told what to do.
You have a responsibility to yourself,
And should do all you can to avoid injury.

And the best thing you can do is
W A R M. U P

Two key ways it helps
✅ opens up shoulders giving you better reach
✅ gets your head in the game

Paddling can be serious and still fun.
Don’t risk your health and wellness just because of what other people may think.

The Paddlers who can’t walk two days later or are out because they pulled something are the ones who lose out 👊🏽 Time to change it up.

“Being your best is a choice”

🤟🏽 You can feel your forearms starting to pulse,
Your left hip starting to twinge,
Lower back starting to ache,
And shoulders are up around your ears,
You are on your way out,
Seriously doubting you can make the next stroke.

You have 2 choices

To Paddle like a tool,
Or pull your shit together
And concentrate on good movement.

You may not have been paddling long enough yet to notice this but as you get tired or worry about stability in canoe your reach drops to your side.
It’s a natural reaction.
You need to make a conscious decision to change that hence the reason why you need to train,
Body and mind.

Come up with good cues for your crew that make sense & keep it simple for you ✅ front
✅ full blade
✅ pressure
✅ relax

Choose a technique that works for you all & you all understand.

If you are having that ‘real’ internal battle that’s when you need to pull out the big guns & start running your positive self talk through your mind, words, mantra whatever it is that gets you going.

My favourite is ‘make every stroke count’
Or if I’m feeling heavy & sluggish I think light, & that thought changes my posture & mood straight away.

@gaylene_sciascia one of our awesome Waka-Ama🚣🏾‍♀️ Athletes, had a rotator calf problem and lacked muscle activation.
