In June 2005 I was commissioned by Ballroom Marfa @ballroommarfa to do a large-scale site-specific Installation for the Gallery’s Courtyard. Shorty after arriving to Marfa, having never visited, I took a stroll to explore the historied (Judd) West Texas town (Area: 1.6 mi²). A couple blocks later I came upon a ‘FOR SALE’ sign in front of a shell of a building, uncannily recalling Ed Rucha’s 1966 ’Standard Station’- what turned out to be Marfa’s original ‘Mobil’ Station. I called the number posted on the sign, and not long after purchased the property.
With no previous building experience I set out, along with a small crew from the border town of Presidio, to build out what would become UNITED ARTISTS, Ltd.
In January 2006 UNITED ARTISTS, Ltd. opened it’s doors with the Inaugural Exhibition of works by Carol Bove, Adam McEwen, and Seth Price. Among the seminal works exhibited was Carol Bove’s ‘shelf’ work- ‘White Woman’, 2005.
UNITED ARTISTS, Ltd.’s Second Exhibition: Matthew Brannon, Wade Guyton, and Patrick Hill included one of Wade Guyton’s first ‘flame’ paintings- ‘Untitled’, 2006, 54 in x 30 in, Inkjet on Primed Linen. The work sold for $9000 in 2006. It’s Current Estimate: $2,000,000 - $3,000,000 (Million). The Third Exhibition included Peter Coffin, Anne Collier, and Eileen Quinlan. Since opening it’s doors, UNITED ARTISTS, Ltd. has exhibited Carol Bove, Nate Lowman, Kathryn Andrews, Darren Bader, Anne Collier, Wade Guyton, Roe Ethridge, Sadie Laska, Justin Adian, Kon Trubkovick, Eileen Quinlan, and Karl Haendel- who’s site-specific mural ‘Questions for Marfa’, 2011, occupies the building’s East wall- among dozens of other lauded Internationally artists.
