If you think you were hot this past week, imagine being an African Penguin..... You heard me right, not all penguins live in Antarctica and need cold climates to survive. In fact, these tiny butlers live on boulder filled beaches, and build burrows in crevices and sand dunes. One of the most distinctive features of the African Penguin is a small pink gland above each eye, which helps them cope with the high temperatures in South Africa. The hotter the penguin gets the more blood is sent to these glands which is cooled by the air, thus keeping the animal cooler. In the 2nd photo you can both adults and juveniles. Some are molting their brown downy feathers. Some young still don't have their adult face markings yet. While they are very cute, the African Penguin is one of the most endangered types of penguins, and thus all viewings and photos of them are from boardwalks.
