This is one of the strangest things I've ever written about.
1997, Bradenton, FL. A waterlogged human hand was found on the Manatee River. This was mysterious, police didn't know what to think of it. After much care, the medical examiner was finally able to get prints off the hand. It belonged to a man named Willie Suttle. Willie had been dead for 5 years, and he was supposed to go to the grave with both his hands.
They exhumed Willie's body, and he most definitely was missing his hand. But that wasn't all. His internal organs had been removed, and several tiny voodoo dolls complete with pins took their place. Among the dolls was a note cursing many local residents, the people these voodoo dolls were supposed to represent. There were also pins stuck in the body which was discovered during x-ray. Willie himself had become a voodoo doll.
Police went to the funeral home which handled Willie's funeral arrangements, that's where they met the owner, Paula Green Albritton. Paula was taken in for questioning, and she admitted everything. She was a voodoo priestess, and she told police this was her religion. Her funeral home hadn't been doing well, business wise, and she knew how to stop that. She made the voodoo dolls representing her enemies (other local funeral home owners, her ex, etc.) placed them inside Willie's body. As the dolls rotted, her enemies were supposed to rot. When asked why Willie's hand had been cut off, she said it was supposed to be her "helping hand". Turned out it was just the opposite, without that hand, she would never have been busted.
Paula was sentenced to a year in prison, but that was later overturned.
