Sassoon Docks is one of the oldest docks in Mumbai. It was the first wet dock constructed in 1875 in Bombay. It is one of the few docks in the city open to the public. It is situated in Mumbai Harbour. This place is always filled with fisherman especially Kolis, Who are these people?? .
.
. We all have seen Koli Maushis (fisherwoman) boarding local train all over the Mumbai and suburban areas with her basket full of fishes and huge ornaments. Here's a little bit more about this community. Koli people have a rich history as the aboriginal fishing community. They were native to the states of Rajasthan, Gujarat & Maharashtra. There might have been a rumor about them, a negative impression of people as an aggressive. But that's not entirely true as a matter of fact they are the most fun loving, caring and party people you will ever met in your life. The arrival of the Portuguese during 1500. As the city came under British patronage, the inevitable happened: original inhabitants were sidelined and marginalized. The Kolis were removed from Dongri by 1770 by the East India Company. Long ago, when Mumbai was Bombay & the city was divided into 7 islands, the kolis helped develop the harbour & the coastlines. The name Mumbai comes from the Mumbadevi temple in Dongri worshipped by the kolis.
.
.
.
. Koli males spend most of their day out fishing in ocean and they are actually entitled as 'Men Of The Sea' and after that females sell those fishes. You might have heard them speaking a variant of marathi which is called 'Agri' (their dialect). Originally the community belonged to the ethnic marathi. .
.
. Their culture, cuisine, folk dance, songs & traditional festivals are awesome and fun to be part of. The festival of 'Narali Pournima' entire community celebrates this day as the onset of a new harvesting season, much like the farmers. Prayers are offered to the sea god, and boats are treated as sacred. That's why they are called ' Natives Of Mumbai' .

Open doors to Indian rooftops explored
geometric niches of summer shades by the walls
frayed hem of old clothes scissored
hiding paint stains in their crumpled folds
Stains like dark patches by the shadows of my nose
souvenirs from the heat of my dying, old city
sparrows dive gently into the water bowl here too
The scorched summer reminds me of Delhi. #vscocam #opendoor #poetrygram #minimalism #vivography
