Ever since I was a young man I've enjoyed traveling the highways of Alaska. There's nothing quite like the feeling of hitting the open road without a clear destination in mind, and with it's bevy of winding mountainous backroads, Alaska is a wonderful place to set out and explore. This shot was taken Tuesday afternoon along the road to McCarthy which is a long gravel road that twists, dips, and winds through some of the most stunningly beautiful countryside Alaska has to offer. With its staggering views of the Copper River and the Wrangell Mountains along with countless pristine lakes, wild animals, and sunsets, anticipation builds as you round each bend. You just never know what you might see. It's a drive worth taking and when you do, be sure to take your time and just sort of meander along. There's no need to be in a hurry here. I recommend timing it so that you can see the pinkish-purple hues of the evening alpenglow as it drenches the mountaintops. Any day off of work is a good day, and in Alaska all you need is a little free time and some gas money and adventures await you! -- near CHITINA, ALASKA.
