#visibilityfordisability

MOST RECENT

Social observation: Disability shouldn't be "a big deal" but I definitely notice a change in how the different generations interact with me and my visible/invisible disabilities (obvious exceptions of course).
๐Ÿ™‚
"I spent years working in advertising agencies making national and international brands visible (and have had similar projects more recently). Over the years I've witnessed highly skilled professionals come together and develop branding framework, marketing strategy and creative execution to create visibility for all sorts of products and services. Seriously, thereโ€™s absolutely no reason we canโ€™t do the same for something far more important like disability."
โ™ฟ
The above is from a piece I wrote (link in bio) about making disability visible.
It all started when I was listening to a podcast last week by Australian journalist @miafreedman - In it she was discussing something that made headlines over here in Oz (I briefly explain it in the article). The two issues (being disabled and being gay) are not related but what Mia says about visibility is applicable to both.
In short, visibility creates greater awareness and understanding.
Visibility changes attitudes which stops stereotypes.

As I explain in the article, TRUTHFUL visual representations are particularly important for impressionable young minds because inclusive children become inclusive adults.
Being visible isn't always easy because sometimes I just want to be invisible under a blanket on the couch but on the other hand I know how important visual representation is! #catch22

Have an awesome day whatever you are doing and if you can, please just show up and help create #visibilityfordisability

Speed mentoring! I was recently asked to mentor our next generation of media professionals and share my industry insights at a #speedmentoring event in Sydney.
๐Ÿ™‚
We all helped the mentees navigate the media maze and I only wish I'd had something similar when I was a university graduate all those years ago.
๐Ÿ’™
This is me at Google HQ with Antoinette Lattouf, one of the co founders of #MediaDiversityAustralia and an Australian journalist committed to making the media more #inclusive in many ways ๐Ÿ‘ #collaboration
Such a fabulous event in partnership with Women In Media @wim_aus - Congrats to all involved! .

Please donโ€™t get complacent about your life! Thereโ€™s a difference between being relaxed on the couch after work in your pyjamas and being relaxed about life. โ˜บ
By all means #relax with #friends and stop caring about who wins the next season of #TheBachelor - Stop caring about whether or not your #skinnyjeans actually make you look #skinny โ€“ BUT just donโ€™t stop caring about your life. Donโ€™t lose that enthusiasm, energy and drive to get up and #giveashit about the world around you. ๐ŸŒŽ
Iโ€™m so grateful to have been given a second and a third chance to live and nothing saddens me more than to see #perfectly #healthy people merely existing and meandering through the day without any passion for life. ๐Ÿ˜’
That doesnโ€™t mean you have to go to university and become a rocket scientist for you to 'be something' but it does mean we all have to stop taking our precious life for granted. ๐Ÿ’™ When I had every bit of independence taken away from me and couldnโ€™t even blow my own nose, I swore to myself that if I ever got some of that independence back I wasnโ€™t going to waste it. ๐Ÿ’œ
My life isnโ€™t perfect and neither am I but Iโ€™m so grateful for the people in it โ€“ including you for reading this. Have a beautiful day ๐Ÿ˜˜ xx .

When you think of comedy, #disability probably isnโ€™t the first thing that comes to mind. ๐Ÿ˜‰
But seriously, some pretty #funny stuff happens in my world. Sometimes itโ€™s not ha-ha funny, but more like eye-roll and face-palm funny. Such as the #woman who kept speaking really loudly to me because I was in a #wheelchair โ€“ I can only guess she thought I lost the ability to #walk and #hear too! ๐Ÿ˜‚
I know there are plenty of things about disability that arenโ€™t in the slightest bit #amusing but I also know my disabled friends are some of the wittiest, funniest, piss-takers around! ๐Ÿ˜
I love this clip from #BritiansGotTalent (link in bio) and itโ€™s such an #awesome example of how #comedy can be used really well to break down #barriers and raise #awareness about issues that arenโ€™t usually funny per se. ๐Ÿ˜€
Thanks @mandad8 for telling me about it. Does anyone know where I can buy his shirt?!

If you donโ€™t have a #disability, what you think about it or how you think about #disabled people is largely a result of your lived experience. Either the people you know or the #media you consume. I'm not just talking about #tv or #socialmedia but all forms of popular culture that shape us and dictate our #values and #opinions. ๐Ÿค”
We canโ€™t change the #people you know but we can do something about the #media you consume to ensure there is a more accurate #representation of people with disability. ๐Ÿ‘
That means two things: 1) Including more people with disabilities in #popularculture (not just in documentaries about #hospitals). We make up 20% of the population so our screens need to reflect our streets. 2) Not misrepresenting disabled people as victims or other narrow #stereotypes - Attitude Foundation Ltd has provided a list of these examples and Iโ€™ll pop a link in my bio.
To be honest with you, I'm a little tired of repeating myself. It's time for #bigbusiness to step up. โ˜บ
Credit to those brands like @targetaus and others who are creating change and not just talking about #adinclusion but DOING it. โค
Ok, that's all from me. I'm flying to Sydney next week and will be geeking out on more of this stuff! Hope you all have a great weekend! ๐Ÿ˜˜

โ€œJoy is what happens to us when we allow ourselves to recognise how good things really are.โ€ - Marianne Williamson ๐Ÿ’œ
Sometimes it's easy to get caught up in your own stuff and forget your privilege. Like now for example, if you're reading this on your smart phone, then you've probably paid for that at some point and you're living in a country where the government hasn't blocked your access... ๐ŸŒ
Try not to let problems get overwhelming so that they feel bigger than me really are in the overall picture. ๐ŸŒ
Don't get so caught up in some #firstworldproblem that you forget how incredibly fortunate you are for the little things that we take for granted - even Instagram! #itsthelittlethings โ˜บ
I have to remind myself of that some days. Like last week when I was losing my shit over a little email. Seriously, there are days with #chronicpain flare ups when I wish an email was my biggest problem! ๐ŸŒ
We all have crappy days for different reasons but a little global #perspective has always been a way for me to get over myself (and my problems) really quickly. ๐ŸŒŽ
I think that started when I was younger and grew up watching a lot of International news and current affairs at home. Soapies were banned in our house. ๐Ÿ˜‚
We were messy, happy kids but we weren't ignorant to the fact that there was a big wide world out there and I couldn't wait to grow up and explore it. ๐Ÿ’™

I might look a bit differeent at the gym (where this was taken) but I still get the same awesome endorphin rush after a session ๐Ÿ˜

BEING OK WITH BEING DIFFERENT - "I'm ok with me so why can't you be?" Having aquired disabilities I've seen both sides and the difference (in public perception before and after) is so interesting! - It's the last day of #amputeeawarenessweek today and my full interview with @queenslandhealth is over on my Facebook page (link in bio). This has been a really fun exercise โ˜บโ™ฟ Of course, this has all been about physical disabilities and amputations but yesterday was world #mentalhealth day - and invisible disability is equally important. I'll save that for another post!

And I on another note... This photo is from my #huffpost article about how #healhy #inspo and #fitspo is loaded with stereotypes and defeats the entire purpose of health and wellness!

Have a beautiful day xx .

I suppose one good thing about a scar from open heart surgery (apart from fixing a dodgy heart valve) is that it kinda gives you awesome cleavage with the right filter!!! #noteeally ๐Ÿ˜‚ Actually, there's more metal holding my sternum together than a lingerie drawer full of underwire bras.

Yesterday was the International Day of People With Disability. I knew I wanted to post something and at first I wasn't sure what but then I remembered I had this little gem stashed away.
.
I have both visible and Invisible disabilities so although you see my prosthetic leg and #wheelchair you don't see my #braininjury and everything that comes with that. In so many ways they impact my life more than a cumbersome, clunky wheelchair ever will.
.
Regardless of whether or not you have a disability, get off Instagram (every second of the day) and get on with living life! โ˜บ

Hi guys! I should probably explain this picture... There'a scar at the bottom of my neck (along my trachea) from a ventilation tube that kept me breathing for two months while I was on life support. Lots of people have them and it's one of the scars (along with my fingers) that I could easily post on here. .
Scars might not be conventionally beautiful but they saved lives and brought life into this world so that makes them incredibly beautiful if you ask me!
.

Social media is full of flawless fluff so when I found an awesome @huffpostwomen article featuring images of real women with mastectomy scars, cesarean scars and other sorts of scars I wanted to share it with you all... As a refreshing change from the highlights reel on here!

At the time Facebook banned it for being too revealing #wtf You can read my full @huffpost article on my FB page (link in bio) ๐Ÿ’œ
