Picture 1: "Where is the sea I wonder?" I'm on the road (again!). I had some time before my flight so I decided to check out the local beach which was close to the airport.
I walked out about 100 metres but as you can see the sea was waaaay more out.
Picture 2: There was a little pod of water surrounded by massive stones for the kids. I ventured in to wash my muddy feet.
Picture 3: Pretty church, isn't it? Let's have a closer look!
Picture 4: Surprise! It is not a church but a mosque. The former Wesleyan Church built in 1870 was converted into the Southend Masjid.
Unfortunately, I didn't have enough time to go in but if you know anybody who lives around this area please tag them in the comments. I'd love to hear about the history of this building and what it takes to convert a church into a mosque. Who made the decision? When was it converted? Were there any oppositions from the local community? •
PS Did you also think it was a church when you saw the first photo? Never judge a book by its cover. 😉
Photos taken in Southend, Essex, UK. I strongly recommend this area btw, the beach is long and beautiful (when it's not low tide). There is an adventure park as well making Southend the perfect place for a family day out.
