Ah, yes. The overwrought, wonderfully sentimental romantic goo that is "Love Is In the Air," released by John Paul Young in 1978. The Scottish-born singer moved to Australia with his family at a young age, and he learned to imitate the local Australian accent to avoid bullying by his classmates. This vocal discipline gave him the training and control he needed to start singing, and it was soon thereafter that his professional career started when he was spotted by a music manager during a local production of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR. With a moderately successful pop solo career in Australia, John Paul Young finally achieved global recognition with his fourth album and its accompanying disco singles, "Standing in the Rain," and "Love is in the Air," the latter of which became a monster hit. Produced by Harry Vanda and George Young, the song positively soars, with a driving momentum and flawless, relaxed vocals from Young (his producers instructed him to sing as if he were having a casual conversation and it works, preventing the song from becoming a saccharine mess). The sugary romanticism of the song is easy to dislike, but even my pervasive cynicism is abandoned whenever this song is playing, warming the coldest cockles of my heart. In the end, it's simply a great track, brought to the attention of a whole new generation of listeners in 1992, thanks to the film STRICTLY BALLROOM. 💃🏽❤️🕺🏽

Like many super nerds of any genre of music, I tend to covet and cherish the more obscure songs, those gems that fell through the cracks or were underground sensations, sometimes only to certain cities, clubs, or DJs. This is not due to elitism or because I think that esoteric disco is inherently superior, but because there is something special about music that is unspoiled by mass consumption and overexposure. Sometimes loving a little known disco tune is like treasuring a private secret all to yourself, and who doesn't like secrets? But despite all that fuss, I'll confess that my favorite disco song is one of the most mainstream, universally loved disco songs ever, and I wouldn't want it any other way. It's Alicia Bridges' 1978 hit, "I Love the Nightlife (Disco Round)." It's a slightly usual track as far as mainstream disco goes, with sparse and shimmering production from Steve Buckingham (it's the first song he produced for another artist), and later remixed by the legendary Jim Burgess. It contains a wonderfully off-beat and husky vocal delivery from Bridges, with just enough attitude. The horn instrument of choice is the saxophone (slow down Alicia, it's not the 80s yet!), and makes for one of my favorite instrumental solos. The song is a tribute to independence rather than love, and it combines dissing a bad boyfriend and celebrating nightlife with an energy that is both euphoric and slightly wistful. The track wasn't originally written as a disco song and wasn't preformed by someone who even likes disco, and it epitomizes the one-hit-wonder phenomenon that plagued the genre. There are other artists that I love more (Donna Summer and Sylvester), but despite all of this, I can't escape the way the song makes me feel. It arouses nostalgia, tugs on my heartstrings and my feet, and lifts my spirits like no other. Obviously, there’s no need to have a favorite song, but I think I can definitively say that I do. Because after all these years and listens, "I Love the Nightlife (Disco Round)" still makes me completely ecstatic with joy. The song is a glorious part of me that will live on forever and I love it will all my heart ❤

Asha Puthli's impressive and varied career in music and film has always been heavy with her own brand of worldliness and unmistakable quirky charm. Born and raised in Bombay, India, Puthli studied Indian classical music and opera before she began her professional career in New York City. Her music draws from many sources, merging eastern and western sounds with a variety of styles and genres, though her sounds are frequently rooted in avant-garde jazz. But few musicians in NYC in the 70s could resist the allure of the dance floor, and as Puthli’s sounds become more funky and her appearance more glamorous, the club-goers and the public responded. The soft, groovy sounds of 1976's "Space Walk," which was on heavy rotation at Mancuso's Loft parties, was an early disco number for Puthli, and a prototype for the space disco sound that would become popular a few years later. But it was the lustrous 1978 single "I'm Gonna Dance" from the disco album L'INDIANA, that solidified her reputation as a musician that could make listeners admire the intricacies of jazz on one album, and then shake it down on the dance floor on the next. There aren't too many musicians who can do that 😁✨💕
