Norman Grant Twinkle Brothers & Jah Shaka - The Right Way LP 1984 Jah Shaka Music / King Shaka was a Zulu warrior whose confidence & power impressed a Jamaican youth who had been transplanted to 1960's London where his legend would begin in 1968, under the name Jah Shaka he would build his first sound system where he alone would operate, select, & deejay. After more than a decade of success as one of the top sounds in the UK, he entered into commercial production in 1980 using experience gained from countless 'dub plate' sessions where he had artists or engineers create exclusive material for his sound system. Norman & Ralston Grant were two brothers from Falmouth in the Trelawny hills of Jamaica who formed a group called The Twinkle Borthers where they sang as well played drums & guitar respectively. They became quite successful during the 1960's on the tourist hotel circuit before devoting their music to more cultural concerns in the 1970's when they made a string of excellent albums under their own production with international distribution by labels like Virgin Records. In the 1980's they relocated permanently to the UK where they soon made contact with resident defender of the faith Jah Shaka, both The Twinkle Brothers & he continued to make Roots Reggae while the rest of the top producers & the majority of artists had since moved into Early Dancehall, while the Steppers Style pioneered around 1978 remained a standard for Shaka. In 1984 Norman Grant would join Jah Shaka at the famed Addis Ababa Studio with musicians like Ras Elroy Bailey on bass, Lloyd 'Jah Bunny' Donaldson & Errol 'The General' Francis on drums, Tony Benjamin & Mike Dorane (aka Michael Dan or Dan Justice) on guitars, & Garnet 'Sgt. Pepper' Cross on keys. The Twinkle Brothers b/w The Twinkly Brothers - Free Africa b/w Free Africa Dub 7" single 1978 Northcoast label [both label variations shown] (spelling errors on label) / As detailed, brothers Norman & Ralston Grant began in an established group called The Cardinals where they would gain their first professional experience playing on the North Coast tourist circuit in the early 1960's. In 1966 Norman would make his debut recording & the Twinkle Brothers would release tracks for various producers as well as self produced material leading to their breakthrough debut album Rasta Pon Top in 1975 (see my previous post of that LP). With this success, The Twinkle Brothers would secure a deal with UK based Virgin Records & eventually deliver three albums for them from 1978-1980. This single "Free Africa" is taken from their first album for Virgin Records called Love from 1978. The track is a storming Steppers style rhythm played by The Revolutionaries with Lowell 'Sly' Dunbar's characteristic drumming & veteran Ansel Collin's dominant keys behind The Twinkle Brothers' top quality harmony as they speak of the divisive militancy of areas of their ancestral homeland. The b-side has a serious dub mix created using reverb, EQ filters, track drops, track solos, delay, voice & instrument extracts, & other well controlled techniques, possibly by engineer Lancelot 'Emperor Maximillian' McKenzie. #AllVinylReggaeCollections @normiegeee #TwinkleBrothers #NormanGrant #RalstonGrant #NorthcoastRecords #RootsReggae #SevenInch #45rpm #7inch #FalmouthJamaica #instavinyl #vinyligclub #ReggaeHistory #BSide #BSideDub #ReggaeRecords #ReggaeVinyl #ReggaeCollection #DubRemix #DubVinyl #DubVersion #VintageVinyl #VintageReggae #VintageDub #ReggaeDub #DubReggae #VinylCollection
