NV Laurent Perrier Grand Siecle Grand Cru (Champagne, France) (1998, 1999, 2002 base) 55% Chardonnay, 45% Pinot Noir
The tete de cuvee from Laurent Perrier, this lovely wine blends three beautiful vintages including the legendary 2002 seamlessly to make an amazing champagne.
This takes things up several dozen notches into the stratosphere, as this is one of the very best champagnes I've had this year, and I've had many of the best in the world recently. Named "the great century" after the reign of the sun king, Louis XIV, this wine just brings it.
It's a beautiful gold color in the glass with some of the most delicate bead I've seen, almost microscopic. There's surprisingly robust mousse given the age, and the nose gives no hint of age, with zero oxidative properties. I only sense freshly baked brioche, lemon curd, and Asian pear, with lithe acidity and stony minerality. There are a century's worth of complexities in the midpalate and finish, but again, drinkability is apparently the hallmark of Laurent Perrier as I could easily polish off a bottle in a sitting. This is pricey at about $110/btl but what a wine! @klwines @klwineshollywood
