2001 Chateau Lafite Rothschild
After 2000, any wine that 01 produced would have big shoes to fill. Because it was overlooked, it offered enticing prices and very good quality. While the star of the vintage is the right bank, the Medoc still produced some really good wine at a more reasonable price point.
This Lafite was decanted for 90 minutes, during which the fruit came forward on the nose with cassis and a bit of cedar. The longer it sat the fruitier the nose got. The palate is well balanced and nicely layers cassis, tobacco and earth with very smooth tannins that have resolved almost completely. Smooth finish with lots of earth
Drinking really well now, I would say this is either at or very near peak.
