Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) 🌊 7/10 🌊
I didn't have high expectations for this film in terms of cinematic excellence, but I did expect to be entertained.. and entertained I was 😎
This movie was your standard POTC swashbuckling bucket of fun. The classic score of this movie with the reoccurring pirate tune keeps the energy up at all times and makes the pace of the film seem faster than it actually is which is a good thing. 🎻 The VFX was pretty spot on, particularly during the scene where the ocean splits down the middle, as well as the appearance of Salazar and his crew.
Speaking of Salazar, I thought he was a great villain and felt connected to his revenge plot against Jack Sparrow, including his ‘undead’ sharks as a weapon. Javier Bardem did an excellent job becoming this character and his portrayal felt very authentic. Another standout character was, as always, Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa. Rush never fails to blow me away with his incredible ability of transforming into a character. I was sad to see him meet his fate.
One of the main disappointments for me in this film was Johnny Depp playing Jack Sparrow. Jack seemed a lot dumber in this film and lacked the clever and manipulative traits he had in the previous movies. There were also some scenes that felt unnecessary and overall the movie could have been cut down by about 20 minutes, but this was not a huge deal.
I welcome any pirate movie as I really enjoy them and it was cool to see Jack Sparrow’s crew together once more. ⚔️ I also LOVED the reunion at the end with Elizabeth and Will and their son, and am hoping this will spawn another film with the original cast members in it. I can appreciate this movie for a light-hearted, fun, pirate sequel. I would watch it again and I give it a 7/10.
