"But these words people threw around - humans, monsters, heroes, villains - to Victor it was all just a matter of semantics. Someone could call themselves a hero and still walk around killing dozens. Someone else could be labeled a villain for trying to stop them. Plenty of humans were monstrous, and plenty of monsters knew how to play at being human." — Victoria Schwab, Vicious
This book is one of my most favourite reads of 2017. I picked up Vicious because I was so intrigued by the synopsis given at the back, and I am so glad I did. This book is absolutely BRILLIANT. Schwab picks a very common and hyped theme but manages to introduce concepts that were never really heard of before. And this is one of the reasons why I loved it so much - the originality of the book.
Vicious is about superheroes, except here, you can't pinpoint who the hero is. Yes, there are characters who do things you know are wrong, but does that make the actions of othe other right? Which brings us to the moral grey-ness of the characters. LOVED that about this book. It's what set it apart from any other super-power related thing you'll see or read. This isn't your typical "man with abilities saves the city once more". It's about competition, friendship, trust, betrayal, vengeance and hunt. It's about perspectives.
The literature of the book? Amazing. Beautifully written, Vicious is full of lines and passages that strike a chord somewhere in the mind. The plot is perfectly paced, and the story is so fascinating it's an absolute page-turner. It keeps you hooked until you find out what's happening and to add to that, I LOVED the way Schwab incorporated the flashback chapters. Loved the various timelines of the book, and tbh I feel like that's what made Vicious this amazing. It kept a sense of mystery, slowly unravelling one step at a time.
Would I recommend this to anyone? Hell yes. Everyone should read this. Go grab a copy right now. If anything, you'll definitely fall in love with the writing style. V.E. Schwab is hands down my current fav author. Can't WAIT to read the sequel (coming out in 2018 *squeals in excitement*) and Monsters of Verity.
