Check out this incredible capture!
This is @YellowstoneNPS's Grand Prismatic Spring, which is the largest hot springs in the United States, and the third largest in the world. If you look at the people at the bottom of this photo, you can get a sense for how large this hot spring is, which is approximately 370 feet (112.8 meters) across! Hot water travels from a crack in the Earth's crust 121 feet (37 meters) below the surface, meaning a 10-story-tall building could fit inside of it.
The color of this hot spring is where it gets its name. The bright, multi-colored rings are a result of thermophilic (extreme heat loving) archaebacteria and bacteria living in the water which is cooler towards the edges. The deep blue color in the middle is due to the lack of anything growing in the middle, and the depth of the spring helps scatter the light which reaches our eyes as a vibrant blue. Fun fact: the bacteria in this spring has been used to help solve crimes and has helped NASA in their search for extraterrestrial life.
If you want to capture a shot like this, be sure to obtain all the necessary permissions. Illegally flying drones over this incredibly hot spring will not only cause you to lose your drone and get you a very expensive fine, but will disturb the sensitive environment of the spring. #RulesForExploring
