Yesterday at the Circle I saw a young Arab couple looking at us from afar. The woman is veiled and wearing all black and he looks like he isn’t older than 23 years old. So I decided to go talk to them. “Ahlan wa Sahlan,” I said. “Ahlan Ahlan,” he bewilderedly replied. I introduced myself and came to find out that they are visiting from Saudi Arabia. “So what is that?” he asked. “Well, that has been going here in the area since the 1950s. Just a group of people who gather here every Saturday and Sunday to play music and have fun. There are no leaders, no rehearsing, little-to-no rules, and everyone is welcomed, no matter who they or their beliefs are.” “Ya3tik el3afya”
A few hours later Buddhist monks came to watch, but they also kept their distance.
Then when it got dark, the Circle was flooded with some graduating class who kept hugging and chanting.
Finally it all ended up with a close encounter with some girl with sapphire eyes.
