I am a proponent of making sure your body gets a certain amount of natural fats - for countless clients it seems to work and as long as it is within reason, I haven't seen ANY studies saying you should be aiming to cut fats completely from your diet.
-
But even with natural fats, there is a balance you need to find.
-
Specifically if we look at Omega 6 fatty acids (which a lot of diets are particularly high in) and omega 3. We need to find an appropriate ratio to balance the 2.
-
Some studies suggest the ideal ratio is somewhere between 1:1 and 4:1 and most typical diets are stacked 10-15x more towards Omega 6.
-
This has been linked to a higher risk of cancer and cardiovascular diseases as well as finding a correlation with obesity in those with a higher omega 6 intake.
-
The main culprit tends to be cooking oil - often derived from vegetables - so rapeseed oil, corn oil, soybean oil, safflower oil, cottonseed oil, sunflower oil and a typical Western diet uses a lot of these.
-
Omega 6 oils are unstable because they’re made of polyunsaturated fats (lots of seats open at the table). Cooking at high heats, microwaving, or frying will oxidize the fats. Oxidized omega 6 does damage to your DNA, inflames your heart, and raises your risk for several types of cancer, including breast cancer. It can also interfere with brain metabolism.
-
Some companies will stabilise these oils when using them in foods - which is where you get hydrogenated and trans fats from and those can present much higher risks to your health especially in the long run.
-
Omega 3 fats are an integral part of cells membranes throughout the entire body and affect the cell receptors in these membranes.
-
Omega 3s also provide a launchpad for making hormones that regulate blood, heart, and genetic function.
-
Studies show that omega 3s help prevent heart disease and stroke, may help control lupus, eczema, and rheumatoid arthritis, and *may* also help protect against cancer.
-
In a plant based diets, hemp seeds, chia seeds and flax seeds are a safe bet in terms of omega 3:6 ratio so try adding a few more into your diet.

Just yesterday someone at the gym asked what I was training for. My answer is always the same: "Life!" (And also keeping up with all my badass clients.)

What're *you* training for?

Some of the stuff you hear from people who have been given the wrong information. Let's deal with these common ones one at a time.
-
1. Carbs (and food in general) eaten after 6pm are NOT automatically stored as fat. The only way this would happen is if that food takes you into a calorie surplus. If you are still eating the right number of calories for your goal and lifestyle, then your body will not draw a line at 6pm and say the next few calories are going to be stored as fat.
-
2. Skipping breakfast - this idea started because of a correlation, not because of science. Often people who skip breakfast are more likely to be snacking and pickingand when hunger really strikes, go for something they crave - which will often have a higher number of calories. As with point 1, if you are still on the same number of calories, you won't gain body fat by not having breakfast.
-
3. Your body is primed to absorb nutrients right after you finish a workout, but there isn't a time limit. If you're not immediately hungry right after your workout, you can wait a little while before getting some food in without affecting your recovery or results.

4. Small meals DO have a small benefit to increased metbaolic rate as your digestive system is more active, but the impact is very very tiny. 3 big meals at your calorie target will get you better results than 5 smaller meals which come in a tiny bit over. Go with what suits you better. It won't have a massive affect on your results.

5. This is a new one. Apparently some people believe combining carbs and fats will mean that the quicker digesting carbs will make the dietary fat you eat immediately get stored as body fat. If my research is right, in fact the opposit is true. Combining fats with carbs will slow down the digestion so can actually help keep you fuller for longer.

So..... after 6 months of working out at the gym in my own little Vegan World I come across This Dude! As far as I know he's been Plantbased for a year and is still making gains and has a great Personal Trainer Reputation 💪🌱😁. This is fantastic for me as we've all heard that "you need meat to build muscle" and to be honest I had felt a teeny weeny bit on the back foot being an out of shape older dude that eats plants😯!. Having said that I am delighted with my own development as I'm not a strick Macro... Micro... protein Shake... BCA.. Gym Junkie kinda fanatic. I just seriously enjoy the Vibe at this Particular Gym because even though I'm (5.7") surrounded by impressive mountain's of Meat Based Muscle.. it's such a friendly non judgmental place where everyone acknowledges everyone and lends a hand or gives tips. What's not to like 😁. I'd recommend BodyWorld for all shapes n sizes Goals n Gains. Coconuts grow in absolute abundance here 🌴👌

They're such a versatile valuable resource. The water is incredible for hydrating and replenishing electrolytes. The flesh is an amazing source of fats, B vitamins and fibre.

I've been using the locally made coconut oil on my body and face after a shower (with a couple of drops of @doterraau frankincense which is amazing for skin tone, sun spots and glowing skin). Coconut oil is also anti all the bad guys including parasites, bacteria and fungus.

I've seen them being used to grow seedlings and hang small plants. They make beautiful bowls, jewellery, jugs and cutlery from the mature coconut shell. Coconut husks are also being used in place of charcoal as a green fuel for fires... The list is endless!

1. Posting pics of my butt/abs/whatever, Instagram "fitness model" style, ain't my thing. As the excellent Lee Boyce writes, "The quality of the followers earned is directly linked to the way you decide to present (or represent) yourself. If you’re one to go to the gym just to self-take and self-publish salacious photographs in the change room after your workout ends, chances are the people who decide to follow you will only be partially concerned with how much you know as an actual fitness authority."

2. Lemme tell you about the workout that inspired this pic! Sometimes the simplest workouts on paper are the toughest in practice. And "practice" was really the name of the game for this workout. I spent 50 minutes doing between 6 and 8 sets of the following:
💪
- Chin-up variations: side-to-side, one arm dominant (the other supporting on a lower bar), one-handed (other hand grabbing wrist), weighted (12.5 lbs dumbbell between feet), and one-arm bar hangs.
💪
- Push-ups in between sets of chin-ups.
💪
- Dumbbell bench press

- Dumbbell high pulls
💪
- Loaded carries with a variety of dumbbell weights.
💪
Lemme tell you, my grip is absolute toast after all this. You don't always need to follow a set workout plan with many different moves. "Practice" workouts like this one, where you take a few moves and practice them as you would any other skill, are an important part of improving your strength!

Yesterday we talked about HIIT (high intensity interval training) and today we're going to switch it over to the other option - Low Intensity Steady State, or LISS.
-
What's great about LISS?
-
It's easy to do, and very beginner friendly. It has a lower risk of injury (when not overused) compared to HIIT because at a lower intensity you have better control and often better technique.
-
It builds your stamina and endurance which on a day to day basis, can help give you higher energy levels for life in general.
-
And you don't necessarily need a huge amount of recovery time.
-
On the flip side, it will usually mean a longer workout session so if you're time pressed you might not be able to get it in regularly.
-
It can also be boring - I tend to use it to catch up on TV series or listen to audio books usually because pounding away at a repetitive movement for a good block of time can be dull.
-
Your options are a little bit more limited - usually walking or jogging, on the bike, on the cross trainer or swimming. With HIIT training you have a few more options in terms of the exercises you can incorporate.
-
And compared to HIIT, you burn less calories per minute of work.
-
But that does mean you recover quicker so might be more active outside the gym, or you have more to put into your other training sessions meaning you could well end up with an overall higher activity level.

As I said yesterday, neither HIIT or LISS is vastly superior to the other. It comes down to what works best for you and your circumstances.

What one CONSUMES is more than just about FOOD! I use breath of fire when I wake up in the morning as part of my movement and meditation practice. Before this I also use a drop of @doterraau
Peppermint oil or Easy Air blend and rub between my palms and inhale to open up the airways.

I start by grounding myself barefoot on the earth and standing towards the sun. Breathing in and out of my nose, I squeeze my diaphragm to push the air out like a pump. Drawing the belly button towards the spine. Focus on the out breath and let the in breath happen naturally. Once you fall into a pattern, continue for a minute or however long feels comfortable for your body. I also like to put my hands over my belly or solar plexus and imagine a warm yellow light filling me up. Take a few deep breaths at the end and smile. 🔆✨

All you have to do is add 1/2 of unsweetened almond milk to one serving of their protein pancake mix (I also add A LOT of stevia) and pop it in the microwave for 2 minutes and you’ve got a fresh homemade, macro-friendly treat quicker than you could run out and buy one! I’ve been busy writing essays and plans for my course. I forgot to workout myself 😱. So today is Day 1 of my new plan (written by me 😎). P.S. layers are the key to working out in cold weather. My garage was a balmy 54 degrees ❄️☃️.

I affirm I will become very strong in all of my #kettlebell lifts. The plan today was to focus strictly on technique and foundational work: Turkish get ups for 15 minutes, overhead carries, and KB deadlifts 4 sets of 15 reps with 24kg. Nothing else. Recording was helpful... I'm able to see that I start losing some control as I lower the weight towards the end, which is normal. My body was already fatiguing. But I tried to fix it in this last set!

You see a lot of debate on whether HIIT (high intensity interval training) or LISS (low intensity steady state) is better for your health and for fat loss.

Both have their pros and cons.

So let's start with HIIT.
-
You can get a great workout and in a short amount of time, you can do it pretty much anywhere with no equipment.
-
In terms of bang for your buck, you probably burn a lot more calories per minute of a HIIT workout than you do with LISS.
-
BUT there are a few other things to consider.
-
HIIT isn't always beginner friendly - in fact it can be offputting for someone just starting out to try to max out in short bursts.
-
And because of the nature of the workouts, with faster movements, you're always going to be a bit more at risk of injury occurring.

If you do other training - especially resistance training - then you want to make sure you are fresh enough and have the energy to give to your other workouts.
-
HIIT training can put your system under more stress than LISS and takes longer to recover from so if you are using it, don't be surprised if you find your performance in your other workouts feels like it is starting to suffer.

In terms of which is best for fat loss, between HIIT and LISS neither is better than the other. It comes down to which you prefer, which you enjoy more and which you're more likely to stick to.

Like I said, per minute of exercise, you burn more calories from HIIT than from LISS but with all things considered it might not necessarily be the best exercise solution for you or your lifestyle or your fitness level.

There aren't many absolutes in fitness. The answer is to always go with what you enjoy and can do safely.

Lounging around the house watching a movie or scrolling through your social media? Why not take a 5-10 minute break and do some stretching or rolling? I️ realized my phone only recorded half of what I️ actually did 🙄 but you get the point! Make the most of your training and recovery with stretching and rolling out! It hurts but it’s worth it, trust me 💪🏼🏋🏼‍♀️
