At my last dreadlock session I was offered human hair extensions. The idea of attaching another persons hair on to my own made me feel sick to my stomach. I was literally gagging at the idea.
It’s so disturbing to me that hair, someone else’s DNA, grown out of their scalp, is attached to another persons hair, like a transplant, but without the regulation. Don’t get me wrong, medically necessary transplants are an medical marvel! This post isn’t about that. This post is about the disassociation many women have about the hair they unnecessarily have attached to their heads. Just as many people disassociate where their food comes from. Open your eyes to the ugly truth.
Do you really think the extensions come from rich westerns? Of course not! Hair is taken from the poorest girls and women in the poorest parts of the poorest countries of the world. Those so destitute that they’re willing to grow their hair for years, and sell it for a fraction of what it’s worth at the salon. You clip, stitch, or glue it in, proudly showing off “ your” hair, colour, style and use it until you’re done, throw it away and get some more.
It’s exploitative. Corrupt. Unjust. Unnecessary. Violent. Ugly.
