Is #honey Vegan? .
When it comes to veganism, one of the most controversial animal products is honey. Ever since the VeganBros uploaded their video about honey the discussion gets more and more heated - especially in the vegan community itself. So here's my opinion on the whole topic:
Honey is a product that is produced by an animal.
A vegan is a person that doesn't eat or use any animal products. So by definition, honey definitely isn't vegan.
But for most people that's not a good enough argument, so here are the ones that convinced me. .
1. Have you ever questioned yourself why bees produce Honey? Surprise Surprise, it's not for humans!
Bees produce honey as a food storage for the colder periods of the year. When humans take the honey they normally replace it with sugar water so that the bees don't starve. The problem with that is that the bees don't get any of the nutrients of the honey which over time destroys their immune system. That is one of the biggest reasons for the widespread death of bees. This is critical for more than one reason. First of all animals are dying because of humans, which of course, is wrong on many levels. Also, it is very bad for the environment because bees are one of the most important pollinators on this planet.
2. "The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than black people were made for white, or women created for men." - Alice Walker
Bees are not supposed to be our slaves. It's as simple as that.
3. Conventional beekeeping is just as cruel as conventional pig or chicken farming. The beekeepers don't care about the animals, they just want to make money. For example, they often clip the wings of the queen bee to prevent swarming. A lot of them also "get rid" of the bees during winter instead of feeding them because it is less expensive. Bees have a nervous system and therefore the ability to suffer. Why should the suffering of a bee be less important than the suffering of a cow, dog or human? .
So let's appreciate the bees for what they are and not for what we can use them for.
Be Vegan, #bee Active!
THANK YOU! 💚
