#varanusniloticus take two, I'm testing a theory that you can tame a #nilemonitor like you can tame a tegu. We'll see what happens over the next few months and years. #varanusofinstagram #nile #monitor #monitorsofinstagram #lizard #lizardsofinstagram #reptiles #reptilesofintsagram #livingthedream

Benin locality banded nile monitor, this guys pattern makes him a screamer. I have been working with this guy daily, and he is very tolerant of me. Very few hissing, but no tail whipping or bites

Luther and Trixxie having a moment😂😂😂 these 2 animals couldn't care any less about one another. #naterszoo #nile #nilemonitor #monitorlizard #varanidae #varanusniloticus #niloticus #dog #lizard #pitbull #pittie #bully #k9 #friends #ourpitpage #manteca #209 #saturday #animals #zoo #shedding

Now keep in mind, with me he's usually very very calm except upon his escape attempts (more often than I'd like to admit) but all around he's awesome. This is just an exemplary defensive display.

Tsume relaxing yesterday 💚
There is just something incredibly special about Varanids. Being born into a family who loved to immerse itself in nature as well as keep a few reptiles at home, I've always been familiar with herptiles both in and out of the wild. Yet no creature I had interacted with before really compares to these denizens of the old world. As a kid my favorite animals to see in the wild were lizards; The ultimate prize at the end of a long and happy day of hiking was always either a big ol' proud Chuckwalla or vibrantly colored Collared lizard (I spent a great deal of my childhood in the Nevada and California deserts). Then I started to really love seeing rattlesnakes more than anything else and snakes became my absolute favorite. I still adore snakes and believe they are among the most beautiful and fascinating animals on the planet but I feel that working with monitor lizards and hopefully someday observing them in the wild will be the ultimate. There is undoubtedly something incredibe about winning over a monitor's trust after a lot of work and patience. The friendship of a monitor (particularly those with troubled pasts and bad reputations like Tsume here) is hard won and therefore all the sweeter. 💛 One thing is common for all reptiles though; They are constantly teaching you something new. If you believe you're an expert with absolutely nothing left to learn from animals, you're seriously out to lunch 😁
Anyway, I love all kinds of reptiles dearly but I think we all have certain species and groups we're a little partial to 🙂 Do you have a favorite reptile or family of reptiles? 🦎

Varanus (niloticus) ornatus

In the paper published by Dowell in 2015, genetic analysis by mitochondrial DNA of V. niloticus and V.ornatus resulted in the result that no sequence difference deserving seeds was found. The color of the tongue, spot arrangement, skeleton, whatever they have a different interest from nilotics, these two kinds have the same thing genetically.
Incidentally, it is a question that remains to be questioned about the fact that the nilotics widely known in Japan remains bigger, and recently mainstream has been that Ornatus exceeding 7 ft will become larger even under the captive. Its one factor that emphasizes that these two species are completely different things in the hobby world more than growing into a framework reminiscent of that of the Lock monitors (V. albigularis) from the original nilotics along with growth I feel it.

Tsume was SUCH a good boy for the vets during his last checkup! ❤😭
A surprisingly common misconception surrounding reptiles in captivity is that they don't require medical attention. Of course they absolutely do, so it's important to scour the land for a good exotics vet before bringing anything peculiar home 🙂 Herptiles are growing in popularity as pets and as a result, so are specialized vets well versed in reptile and amphibian medicine! It's a super interesting field and vets all over the world continue learning new methods and improving old ones, which is so rad and saves lot of lives! I'm excited to be learning a lot as I go 😄 **These pics are from December, but we did happen to bring in one of our rosy boas, "Saturn" for a checkup today. I am so stoked to live so near Dr. Greek's practice; If you've never seen or read any of his work, it's very worth checking out! 🐍💉 #varanusniloticus #nilemonitor #herpetology #petstagam #exoticvet #family #pets #lizards #reptiles #cute #exoticpets #varanus #monitorlizard #animallover #reptilesofinstagram #mcm #monitormonday #vetstudent #tntreptiles #tsume #goodboy #nile #monitor #animals #reptile #vet #itsleviosanotleviosa #loveandlight
