Does the van actually run?
She’s an older, slightly-rusty 1994 Chevy Beauville, and she tends to chug along at a decent pace that usually gets us where we need to go (though never too hastily). So yeah, she runs! Or rather jogs, and maybe with some coughing here and there. Anyways, for the most part she’s been reliably mobile, though I wouldn’t have been able to say that a few months ago.
During our epic, >50 hour, nonstop drive back from Zion National Park @gabeye96 and I were told by three separate mechanics we would not make it back to North Carolina. On the downhills we would throw her in neutral in hopes of building up momentum, and on the uphills we considered ourselves speed-demons if we got above 30mph. We had to be towed. Twice. We called Triple-A with one flat tire, one exploded tire, and the handy knowledge that they would tow us up to 100 miles in the direction we need to go, and when we weren't broken down or riding in the cab of a tow-truck we were switching off in 6-hour shifts. This lasted for over two days straight, but even though we ended up driving with the hazard lights on more often than not, we made it in the end. Shaking, hacking, and smoking we finally managed to coast back into Chapel Hill a just a few hours before class started, jubilant and exhausted.
Since then I’ve been able to invest a solid amount in getting the engine up to snuff, so now she’s back to jogging like a dream. Still coughs sometimes, though.
We’ll see how she handles the drive to Mexico this winter.
