Kupala Night / Ivan Kupala Day (Russian : Иван Купала ; Belarusian : Kyпалле ; Polish : Noc Świętojańska, Noc Kupały, Sobótka ; Ukrainian : Иван Купала)
Kupala night is a celebration of the summer solstice. The tradition has its origin dating back to the times of Slavic, German and Celtic tribes. It's both the longest day and the shortest night of of the calendar year. Much more than Valentine's Day, which is widely held to be a dubious cultural borrowing, Kupala Night symbolizes love. Bonfires are thought to be beneficial to lovers, and daring celebrants jump over the flames to secure good fortune and ward off evil. Young women make crowns from herbs and wild flowers and, having put a burning candle on top,let them float away on lakes and rivers
Kupala Night is celebrated in Belarus, Russia, Poland, Lithuania and Ukraine.
