A fun test I did a few years ago for a video all about your V02 max value and how that relates to your performance in a high altitude climb.
I was mainly running and strength training to prepare for a Kilimanjaro climb at that time, and for me, it was excellent preparation for such an activity! I didn’t do much actual hiking which would’ve been even better as an additional component. Most hikers were actually shocked we did well considering we had barely hiked 😲. Your V02 max is the maximum amount of oxygen that one can use during intense exercise. The more efficient your body is at using oxygen during this type of difficult exercise, the higher your V02 max value!
The highest values are typically found in cross-country skiers ⛷ or soccer ⚽️ players.
The jury is still out whether having a high V02 max value would help you perform better during a high altitude climb (and not get bogged down with the effects of the altitude), but theoretically - you may have a good shot!
I’m not an athlete but it was fun to find out my V02 max value!
