There are some places that you have to see for yourself to believe that they actually exist! This was definitely one of them! The beautiful red lake in Bolivia. Somewhere around 14,000 feet above sea level is Laguna Colorada, Bolivia's stunning white-speckled, red lake. The amazing bloody red coloration is caused by red sediments and algae in the water. The red colour actually intensified as the wind got stronger so we saw the lake change colour slightly whilst we were there. The lake is found on the Altiplano plateau, in the Andes mountain range, which is seen in the horizon. The plankton rich lake also attracts a large number of endangered James’, Chilean and Andean flamingos, the latter being the rarest flamingo species in the world.
