Day 5 of the #fthisishard #flightoftheashtangis challenge: Utthitha Hasta Pandangusthasana // Extended Hand to Big Toe Pose, A-D. Sped up X2. You truly need to Empty Your Head and find your drishti 👀 when doing standing balancing poses. Root down through both feet, engage the quads and even the belly a bit to stabilize the hips. This video shows the sequence of A-D, but you can choose any of them, with straight leg or bent knee. Don’t straighten the lifted leg if it causes your standing knee to buckle, or your spine to round in on itself. Keep the hips and shoulders squared forward to avoid dropping the opposite hip out of alignment. You should stand tall and open through the heart, like Joan of Arc about to be burned at the stake. (That’s honestly always my personal visual. Joan’s like, “Yeah this shit is hard, but fuck you! I’m not afraid!”) 🔥 And now you know... 🤨Oh, remember to BREATHE! In a group class the breath disappears when there’s a standing balance going on, until the teacher says, C’mon, breathe! #utthithahastapadangusthasana is one of those postures that tend to shift and change tremendously for me - from the inside out as well as from day to day. More often than not a true challenge for body and mind when my #pms and #hormone levels are running #skyhigh! 😅 Maybe that’s why I like the nature and expression of this asana..It reminds me of how important it is to stay with what is and to keep working on supporting and strengthening both my #inner and #outer #balance 💜

Balancing postures are a great tool for clearing the mind. In a challenging balance it's difficult to think about anything else other than not falling over! This, coupled with working with the breath, helps us to draw our intention inwards and focus on what we're doing in the here and now; thus bringing a more meditative feel to our practice.
Beginners (and many improvers!) find balancing postures challenging , but a lot of it is mind over matter.
When we think we can't do something, we mentally give up before we've even tried. So next time you're balancing, think "I'm going go to do this" and if you do fall over, well it's just proof you're trying!
For a good balance, fix your drishti (your gaze) in front of you, pull up with the leg muscles whilst simultaneously rooting down into the ground, engage the core muscles and move slowly, with your breath, into the posture. Just have a go... what's the worst that can happen?! 😊
