Light fare provided by the lovely Colleen @breadnspoonjc “U.S. vs. US”, remains a sentiment many people of color experience in The United States Of Amerikkka. For Black people specifically, this sentiment is a figurative and literal reality. Be it failing to signal a lane change, riding in your girlfriends car with a child in the back, running to the bathroom in your own apartment, selling cigarettes outside of a corner store, riding a commuter train, walking home with a friend, making eye contact, selling cd’s outside of a supermarket, wearing a hoodie, walking towards police, walking away from police, missing a front license plate, driving with a broken break light, sitting in your car before your bachelor party, walking up the stairwell of your apartment building, calling for help after an accident, on the way to bible study, laughing, holding a wallet, or attending a birthday party. In other words, just for being Black in Amerikkka, and doing absolutely nothing, these actions can be seen as being not servile enough. Benjamin Zephaniah once said “I want a revolution but everyone’s too busy shopping.” The U.S. government's intentional disregard for Black lives, coupled with our own lack of self awareness is making US, in the eyes of many Amerikkkan “peace” officer, nothing more than living, breathing targets.
The only ones who can help US, is not U.S. It’s US.
