I enjoy artworks that arouse my curiosity the most and “Gaza Surf Club” by Stephan Mörsch is among them. An architectural model in the scale of 1:10, this @gazasurfclub does exist in reality. According to gallerist Stephan Adamski, the artist has long shown interests and concerns over refugees and turbulence in Gaza and the region. Though the artist has never travelled to these places, he studies the sites carefully and reconstruct these architectural models. Gaza Surf Club is the only place in the region where people can enjoy the so-called California lifestyle, meaning people can surf and not cover themselves up from head to toe. The @pepsi ad on the installation is particularly intriguing, as they feature football stars from the last generation, such as David Beckham and Ronaldinho. The gallerist says it reflects the time when the club was built, and the ad of an American soft drink is a symbol of an imaginary California lifestyle that stands for comfort and freedom, which are rare commodities in that region. There is a documentary film @gazasurfclubfilm.
