Day 73 - New Italy (New South Wales, Australia): today we drove more then 400 km, direction Sidney but of course as true Italians we just could not miss this stop right off the highway!
The story of how New Italy began is pretty interesting: 20 families of farmers from Veneto in Northern Italy, were conned by the French Marquis de Rays to establish a community in a phantom paradise of the Pacific named La Nouvelle France(New Guinea). Unfortunately they found themselves the victims of a cruel hoax and after months at sea in very difficult circumstances the people very quickly became sick and many died. Trying to find a solution the two Captains set sail for New Caledonia, but the Italian people found the location unsuitable. The Premier of NSW Sir Henry Parkes sent a ship to rescue them and 12 months from the time they originally left Italy they arrived in Sydney.
But of the 340 who had left their homeland only 217 had survived the terrible conditions. The people then heard of land available in Northern NSW they founded their community, which they initially called La Cella Venezia.
The Museum tells the history of Italian migration to Australia and the memorabilia from the New Italy settlement. The Pavilion celebrates all Italian migrants and their contribution to the culture of Australia.
