The first sketch that I put on a painting is the set up of the end result. But I’ve already done all the hard work of researching the theme and my message for that painting. So when I start sketching, I have a pretty good idea what it is I want to portray and it allows me to see for the first time whether my idea will come across visually. I also evaluate the more technical aspects for the first time; composition, size etc. Then the second layer is up next next. That’s when I fully go for it, but sometimes it just doesn’t seem to work and I have to start all over again. The chances of that happening have decreased over the years though.
