The 3 main types of grips when training are supinated/underhand (left), neutral/vertical (middle) and pronated/overhand (right) - there's also the hook grip (not covered here). Examples of dumbbell bicep curls that can be performed with these grips are the normal/standard curl with a supinated grip, hammer curls with a neutral grip and reverse curls with a pronated grip. Each grip will work the biceps, however, the forearm muscles will be targeted in different ways depending on the grip. Using all grip types is a good way to ensure all the muscles are getting worked. Use them in the same workout or change from one workout to the next. Different grips can be used on many exercises, not just bicep curls.
