1864-L Indian Head Cent. This coin has an interesting story. It was saved from circulation by my grandmother sometime between the 1940's and the late 1960's when she passed away. After that it was hidden in the attic of where my father lived as a child until late 2014. This coin spent at least 45 years in a blue Whitman Folder, marked 1940. It was in the 1864 plain slot, and until today that is what I believed it was. But, the shape of the bust is sharp and thin at the bottom, which is a characteristic only seen on 1864-L coins. The L must have worn away in years of circulation. My research has found that 1864 Plain coins have hardly any space between the 1 in the date and the bust, much less than this coin.
