Back when I was still taking classes, these churches were where I would usually spend my mornings after breakfast. Churches are scattered everywhere all across Rome. Wherever you may find one, you will find also a sanctuary of quiet and peace in a city that is otherwise the embodiment of all that is tumultuous and chaotic. They make great places to study or even to just be alone with your thoughts, which is something I'm seldom able to do even in my apartment. Because of the heaviness of their material and the lack of people inside, they also stay cool like caves, which is a great way to escape the urban Roman heat.
The Vatican and St. Peters Basilica however, are just the opposite of what I described, and there you may find yourself in a 100 degree room so crowded that you stutter through the halls, unable to move side to side. That's not to say that they weren't beautiful and awe inspiring however. St. Peters Basilica is built an such a massive scale that at times it seems incomprehensible.
