"My dream career is to work as an engineer in the automotive industry. I’ve always been highly interested in engineering and innovation—especially since I was born and raised in Dearborn, Michigan. I grew up with the appreciation of the automotive industry and have seen it transform from the fundamentals of transportation, to enhancing beyond this scope to include the features that highlight user experience and ergonomics; it’s the attention to these details that will drive us to the future of technology. My interest is in working with autonomous vehicles, as I see that as great potential for innovation; it implements both of the concepts I’ve learned at UM-Dearborn, and my creative approach to design solutions." Danya Bazzi gained leadership skills and learned more about her abilities while she was a teacher and laboratory assistant for the introduction to engineering and computers course. Nearly 20 students traveled to Honduras with the Global Brigades-UM-Dearborn chapter to provide care to hundreds of patients. Students did clinical work that included dentistry, triage, pharmacology and public health work. Those participating discovered what healthcare is like for other people around the world and started to learn what areas of medicine they are most interested in pursuing as a career.

Did you know that the @UMDearbornOSE runs a pantry for students in need of food items and basic toiletries? The pantry was established in response to student and staff noticing that some students were choosing between food and other needs like books/school supplies, rent, and transportation, while attending UM-Dearborn. It continues to serve students due to increasing research and evidence that demonstrates that food insecurity is prevalent among college students today. Wayne County has the highest rate of food insecurity in the state of Michigan (Feeding America) - and we aim to ensure that metro Detroit students can continue to graduate from UM-Dearborn without going hungry.

Last year the pantry collected more than $18,000.00 of bread and pastries from Panera Bread's End of Day Doughnation program. The pantry is almost entirely self-sufficient, receiving both cash and in-kind donations primarily from students, faculty, and staff.

Anyone enrolled in at least 1 credit hour at UM-Dearborn is eligible to use the pantry and may enroll by visiting the CIViC (2116 UC) or the OSE (2136 UC). Donations to the pantry may be made inside the OSE office or at http://myumi.ch/LzDQQ #UMDearborn #DearbornWolverine

"As a person who thinks about education as a passionate journey, instead of a requirement in order to gain a career, I’d like to pursue higher education. As a person who can't stand injustice in any mean, I aim to study law and pursue a Juris Doctor degree. Prior to this, I’d like to gain more hands-on experience in finding a job where I can exercise my strong abilities and skills and build up new ones, in the field of advocacy, forensic science or government." As a young mother of three, Machhadie Assi dedicates herself to make the world a better place through leadership roles, internships and research conferences. If you could study abroad, where would you go?
Earlier this year, students in Philosophy 390-Topics in Environmental Ethics had a chance to study and live in the U.S. Virgin Islands. This unique study and cultural experience took place during Spring Break Week, allowing students to enroll in other winter term courses. As one participant stated,"Not only is it a fun experience, but there's so much stuff to learn about the environment, tons of peaceful beaches, and exotic creatures. If you want to know more about nature from an ethical standpoint, then this trip is definitely for you." "My dream career is to be instructional designer, creating e-learning and other instructional experiences. Throughout much of my internship with Quicken Loans, I've gained ample exposure to various segments of the industry working alongside a senior business consultant to develop major HR-related projects. More recently, I took the opportunity to begin working as an instructional design intern on their leadership training and development team. My passion for training and development is what drew me to pursue the HR program initially, so naturally, I was thrilled to be given this opportunity." Joshua Bontumasi hopes to continue his path in HR and one day pursue a graduate degree in instructional design. Journalism student Amber Ainsworth recently returned from Norway where she completed a one-month study abroad program. Ainsworth wrote and took photos of music and culture while writing for an American audience. She covered numerous music festivals—Norwegian Wood, Bergenfest, Piknik i Parken, and Miniøya—and also spent time with an artist in rural Norway who owns a husky farm. Previously the arts and entertainment editor and editor in chief of the Michigan Journal, Ainsworth hopes to one day combine her love for writing, taking photos, and music and travel the world. #UMDearborn #WorldWideWednesday
