Your calf is comprised of several muscles, the two primary muscles are your gastrocnemius and soleus, both of which merge into your Achilles tendon. Your Achilles tendon inserts into your heel bone, so tension will be felt in your heel when these muscles are shortened by spasms.

When they contract you stand on your toes, a movement you do with every step you take. As a result, repetitive strain injury to your calf muscles is very common. This is especially true if you are a runner, or if you are a cyclist and you’re pushing the pedals with the balls of your feet.

These muscles are also key factors involved in foot pain that is diagnosed as plantar fasciitis.

Releasing the tension in your calf will prevent a tear in your Achilles tendon, and it will take pressure off your posterior knee and heel.

When your quads are tight, you will have tension or pain in your knee as you try to go up steps, sit down, or each time you take a step and bend your knee. You can easily self-treat your quadriceps, specifically your Rectus Femoris (which is the only one that originates on your pelvis), by using your forearm.

Previously I showed how to treat your quadriceps using a PVC pipe while standing, but you can also easily use the bone of your forearm. Sit, as shown in the picture, have your thumb up toward the ceiling which will cause your ulnar bone to be resting on your thigh. Start as high up to the top of your leg as you can reach, and using your opposite hand for leverage and strength, push your arm so you are sliding from the top of your leg to just above your knee.

Make 2-3 long, deep, passes along the entire muscle. Notice where you feel a bump (that’s the spasm that is shortening the muscle fibers) and where it is painful. After making a few long passes, go to the spasm and center the your ulnar bone directly onto it. Press and slightly bring your arm back and forth, with the intention to lengthen the muscle fibers.

You’ll find the line that involves the rectus femoris will be the tightest, with multiple spasms along the length. This muscle isn’t on the very front of your leg, or the very outside of your thigh, but it is right in between the two places.

You can end this treatment by working on your entire thigh, from the very outside, to the very inside.
⚛️
BTW, this is also one of the key treatments for tight hamstrings, low back pain, and sciatica because it will help to release the downward pressure on your pelvis that is a primary cause of these painful conditions.

Your four quadriceps all merge into one tendon that crosses over your kneecap, and enables you to straighten your leg from the bent position.

When one, or more, of them are tight or in spasm, it will pull on your knee joint each time you bend your knee. It’s just like the analogy of pulling your hair and your head hurts. When they are tight they are pulling on the insertion point and your knee hurts. Plus, depending on how tight they are, you may not be able to bend your knee.

If you have knee pain, the first thing to do is massage your thigh muscles, and lengthen them.
