It is with great pride that I announce my graduation from the University of California, Santa Barbara next month!👩🏽🎓 This is extremely big for me because I’m the first in my family to be earning a university degree. Not only is it the most beautiful campus, it’s also ranked #8 public university in the nation! In a world still plagued by racism, hate, and ignorance, I’m extremely happy to be representing my culture. As a daughter of immigrants, my family and I have worked endlessly for this moment with no handouts. Studies say that “89% of first generation students leave college...without their degree” but cheers to not being just another statistic. We are more than just numbers, we are a testament to our parents’ resistance. My parents were born into poverty and migrated here in hopes of working towards a better life, so I will do them justice. I’m more proud than ever to be an educated latina thriving against a system that was never meant for us. No border will ever be strong enough to hold us back.
