If you are going to write I hope you write to challenge us. We will be resurrected or destroyed by the nature of the conversations we are able and willing to have both with our selves and each other.
You'd have to be blind or deliberately ignorant not to see the many ways America is dividing itself right now. But to think there are only two sides will cripple your vision even further. There are many, many sides, many many divisions, many ways in which we are fractured and crumbling. You cannot turn on any medium and not see legions of people standing up for one cause or another, we are under attack in so very many ways.
And to be able to address even one of these issues, we will have to be able to have conversations which are on an entirely new level of understanding.
We are going to have to have much richer, more nuanced, less aggressive, more creative conversations if we want to survive as a species. That’s what art is. That’s what writing is. Deep conversations with the soul shared publicly.
The days of neatly imagining one side versus another are over. Every day we see how that kind of "us versus them" set up is failing miserably and massively. Two sides is too easy. One winner, one loser. One right, one wrong. If we think it is that easy we have lost touch with the complex nature of what it means to be human, to be a creator, to be a puzzle even to ourselves.
Art is a conversation which brave people dare to have about the things that matter and are not easy. So if you are going to write I hope you will write to both challenge us and embrace us. I hope you will take this beautiful, messy, hopeful, magic conversation we humans might have been and make it real. @allisonmarieconway
