Let's start something NEW !
Each Mondays, I'm gonna share something with you about design 🎈
Todaaay, let's learn a bit more about the history of a typeface : The world renowned Akzidenz Grotesk !
Designed in the wake of the industrial Revolution, in 1986 by the H.Berthold AG type foundry, Akzidenz Grotesk was favoured for its simplicity. In 1957, Max Miedinger at the Haas Foundry used it as a model for Neue Haas Grotesk or... Try to guess what it is. Come ooooon. You got 3 seconds. Ok... 4. You really don't know the answer ? It starts with an H. Well.. It is the world heavyweight champioooon, Heeeeelvetica !!!! Many practitioners of the Swiss Style relied heavily on Akzidenz Grotesk. It combined the dramatic, modern look they were seeking with less rigid geometric forms that positively impacted it's reliability. One of them was Josef Müller-Brockmann. The understated forms of Akzidenz Grotesk are a superb match for dry, statistical information, which is nonetheless loaded with emotional undercurrent. While it looks clear and functional, it carries none of the political baggage associated with Russian Constructivism or Bauhaus.
Akzidenz Grotesk is brave, functional, concise, severe, industrial, geometric, versatile, powerful, bold, depoliticized, modern... TIMELESS.
