Reflections on the 10th anniversary of This Will Destroy You's S/T album :
Ten years ago This Will Destroy You released their self-titled album. It was a bittersweet thing, because on the one hand I knew I had stumbled on a record that I would be listening to, appreciating, and resonating with for the rest of my life, but it was paralyzing because I felt like it was emblematic of everything I was striving to achieve as a songwriter. It's that nagging feeling that you wanted to make that album before they did. The fact that it existed, that it was loosed on the world, meant that the flag was planted. I could only listen intently and try to let it wash over me and influence my creativity somehow, in whatever way that mantle of creative influence gets passed on.
There is something beautiful about how only you can record an album that springs from your own creative spark, a transmission from somewhere deep within. It takes a while to stop chasing your influences endlessly, comparing yourself to others. In the end it's very special to be able to create something that could only have been made by you. It's a privilege to be able to create something that is uniquely yours, hopefully something that resonates with others, that touches them in some way.
In a cabin on a lake TWDY shut out the world, and from there the music gradually emerged and they were able to capture something profoundly beautiful, something that came deliberately and unhurriedly and mysteriously. What came out of those sessions is forceful in its passion and yet very deliberate in that it never feels rushed. It feels like the confident work of a guiding influence wise beyond the years of those assembled to record it.
The album continues to loom large in my creative life, and I know it will always be hovering just out of reach, spurring me on and continually inspiring me. It is a gorgeous, delicate series of movements captured with a depth of feeling that is breathtaking. I encourage anyone reading this to look up the album and check it out.
This is lightning in a bottle. A bolt from the blue. Fire in the belly and the heart and the spirit. Drink deep and let it change you, like it changed me.
