Market scene in 1937 Axum

Until the late 19th century the city of Axum was in decline because the constant wars that we're happening in northern Ethiopia
.
However, beginning with Emperor Menelik II's reign, things became peaceful and things started picking up again
.
Merchants began selling, buyers and sellers started trickling. Visitors started going to the holy places again and things slowly became better and settled throughout Nigiste Zewditu's reign
.
The city started regaining it once lost religious status again with the coronation of Qadamawi Haile Selassie
.
HIM built new churches in the city, including the magnificent #TsionMaryam Church; renovated the older churches; and refurbished many of the Monuments (Hawelts)
.
The beautiful vintage photos is of a market scene in beautiful Axum, in 1937 during the Reign of Qadamawi Haile Selassie
.
Love the pose of the woman holding her head in her left hand & umbrella on her right. The hair style and everyone too busy to care whose takin their photos
.
Love how almost everyone has black umbrella. At the same time (1930s) people in many parts of Ethiopia have locally made umbrellas, you know, the one made with wood and bamboo, the signature umbrella of old Ethiopia

Spies & #ArädaGiyörgis
Addis Ababa, #Ethiopia
Circa. #1901

Part Two
.
Arada Giyörgis under construction in 1901
.
Read Part One for background info (previous post)
.
Before the battle, the Italians had refused to come out of their fortifications for a number of days. It was up to the Ethiopian spies to convince them to come out
.
One of the #Ethiopian #spies was Bäsha #Awalom, a double agent. The last information he gave the Italians would ruin them
.
The Battle of Adwa was fought on March 1, which was Feast of St. George (#Giyörgis)
.
Beginning on February 28, Awalom told the Italians that no Ethiopian is going to fight on March 1 because it's St. George day
.
Also, it was well known that Menelik never fought without the Taböt (Ark) of St. George
.
As such, out of respect for St. George it was likely that the emperor will do some church devices
.
That night, Awalom explained that, the vast majority of the Ethiopian force already left for church, to feast & celebrate #KidusGiyörgis
.
Some of the information was true. A detachment of the Ethiopian army went to pray at #TsionMaryam church. #Menelik was praying at a nearby St. George church
.
General Barateiri decided to launch what he thought would be a surprise attack
.
The #Italians began marching for their surprise attack when it was dark, completely unaware that they were surrounded by #Ethiopians, who were quietly & stealthly watching their every-move
.
One of the generals, #Albertoni, was supposed to occupy a strategic mountain Known as Kidane Mehret. His guide, was supposed to take them there
.
Except that the guide was an Ethiopian spy, Balambaras Gebre Egzeäbher
.
Gebre Egzeäbher took Albertoni's Army to the wrong mountain, an isolated area, cut off from the rest
.
By the time they discovered they had been led astray, it was too late. Fitawrari Gebëyehu's army was on them
.
Other Italian forces, were themselves surprised by the armies of Ras Wale, Ras Mikael, Ras Mengesha, Ras Alula, Ras Sebhat, Etege #Taitu,Wagshum Guangul, & more
.
Ethiopians won decisively .
Menelik decided to built a church in honor of St. #George for saving the Day

Holy Trinity Church in Ethiopia #Repost @vintageethiopia

This imposing cathedral is not in Europe. It is the #KidisteSelassie Bète Kristian (Holy Trinity Cathedral) in addis. The second highest church in Ethiopia (after Tsion Maryam in #Axum)
.
It is the resting place of Ethiopia's emperors, patriots, and imperial family
.
Its a block away from the Parliament building near Nigiste Menen Street. It was built by Qadamawi #HaileSelassie
.
Construction was halted by Italy's invasion in 1935. It was completed in 1942, two years after victory
.

The fruits of #Qadamawi Haile Selassie: (A) #Eritrea, 3 mosques & 4 Churches; (B) #Showa, 3 Churches & 2 mosques, (C) #Hararghe, 4 mosques & 2 churches, (D) #Sidamo, 3 churches & 1 mosque; (E) #Arsi, 3 mosques, (F) Gondar, 6 (2 new & 4 rehab); (G) #Tigray, 5 (2 new & 3 rehab, including #TsionMaryam); (H) #Wollo, 2 churches (maybe more) & 2 mosques; (I) #Gojjam, 2 churches; (J) #Jimma, 2 church & 1 mosque
.
The Emperor, diligently & quietly, worked hard. He has left us with many "good fruits." Unity, Roads, Universities, High Schools, Airlines, AFRICAN UNION, Churches, Masajids, & thousands more
.
Ethiopia's enemies fear his name, they fear what he can inspire the people to, UNITY. So, they tell lies about him. They are working hard to prevent people from turning towards our emperor, it mean turning to unity. They spread lies, not love, not unity, not progress, they don't build homes, churches or mosques
.
WHAT IS YOUR FRUIT?

Melkam Timket
Addis Ababa, #Ethiopia
Circa. #1959
.
Today is the 2nd Day of #Timket (#Epiphany). A three day event. So, what happens each day? (See bellow)
.
Photo is of Ethiopian youths adorning "Ethiopian cloths" & celebrating #Timket in January #1959
.
#Timket is the 2nd most important festival celebrated by Ethiopians (not the 1st, as some think. #Mesqel is)
.
It's importance is evident from the fact that, on this day, the most important of all sacred objects, #theArkoftheCovenant is displayed to the followers of God
.
We celebrate the #baptism of, our dear lord, #JesusChrist for 3Days. While there are symbolism, descriptions, & reasons for nearly everything that is done in the processions, there is not enough space to explain. So:
.
DAY 1: Ethiopian Christians flock to churches in every city & village. Every church in Ethiopia has a replica of the Ark.The priests carry replica of the Ark. Then, they make their way to a nearby stream (river, lake, etc). Euphoric celebrations begin
.
When the Ark is carried out of the church & moved through the streets, Ethiopian youths celebrate loudly beating drums with bear hands, musical instrument, sticks, & horns. Young women chant melodic songs while older women occasionally make, that well known Ethiopian sound, the high pitched, ELELELELE
.
This particular celebration is traced back to the #OldTestament. When #Moses came down from #MtSinai, the faithful welcomed him with such celebration. Also #KingDavid
.
It's a thank you to God for entrusting us (Ethiopians & Others ) with his laws, #10commandments. The original #Ark sits at #TsionMaryam in #Axum brought by eldest son of #Zedok
.
Every year we let God know we have never forgotten the honor he bestowed on us. Each Timket, we celebrate as if the Ark was given to us for the 1st time
.
On the way, nearly everyone in town/village joins the march (even Muslims). Once they reach the river, the Arks from every church are put infront of the water (river, lake, bath). People light up bonfires, people spend the night chanting & frolicking, priests praying
.
Next morning, the 2nd Day of #Timket begins
.
DAY 2 & 3 (tomorrow's post)
