Everything in the bible, from beginning to end relates to man's heart and how God wants to lead us, not force us into repentance and return to Him.
Many legalists will cite John 14:23-24 as a means to force the law upon believers to obtain God's love and mercy. "Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me." Yet they fail to notice that it is love that gives birth to obedience because a person wants to, and not the other way around. Legalism will never birth love because it tells you that you must obey.
We can only love God because He first loved us. Nothing we can do, like following the commandments will make us love God.
Why? It's because of what Jesus did on The Cross and not what we can do for God. Big difference.
Isaiah 64:6 tells us, "All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away." Religion is about man reaching out to God.
Relationship is about God reaching out to man through Jesus Christ.
So if you're concerned about keeping any commandment, instead worry about cleansing your heart and stop fingerprinting others about the law.
There is a specific reason why Peter writes in Peter 4:8 that "love covers a multitude of sins."
