Brought the new #compoundbow up to the #archery range at Tom Sawyer Park. I'm embarrassed to admit that the first shot was a total failure, and I lost the arrow. Im so used to shooting my #recurvebow that I didn't look through the peep site. I won't make that mistake again.
This was my first time shooting compound outside of a few practice shots at #cabelas setting the bow up. I started at 20 yards, but as soon as the 30 yard target was available I moved over. My wife says from the pictures that I'm doing great, and maybe for my first time out I am, but I wouldn't say great. 30 days until #archeryseason starts, so I need to get better.
Half way to the range I realized I didn't bring any tools to adjust the site. Next time I won't forget, but I figured out which one was set for the 30 yards. I worked on my anchor, found what was comfortable and a consistent spot for both my index knuckle and thumb. After listening to @onpointwithgarrettweaver and watching several of his YouTube videos, I know consistency is key. I found my lane, and walked it. Wasn't quite up to running it yet, but took my time and walked it.
I tried Garrett's release method, but man it just doesn't work for me. Pulling my shoulders together with the release makes me feel like I don't have control. My thumb rests along my jawline, my knuckle in the what seems standard socket between my jaw and ear. I was going to set up the camera to film me, but the place was pretty busy with both archers and cross country kids across the way. Maybe next time.
Overall, the 1 hour and 45 minutes was well worth it. My shoulders are tight, but I don't be able to go back out until Saturday morning. Plan on maybe a 90 minute session Saturday morning and Sunday evening. Then Tuesday and Thursday evenings as well. 4 days a week, 6 hours, I should be right about 30 hours practice at the end of the month.
And a special thanks goes out to the @gowildapp and @bradluttrell as I wouldn't be prepping for my first hunt without the support of such a great community.
