Sorry for last nights social media silence.
There aren't too many words to describe what happened yesterday. But these photos sum it up pretty well & the two I'd pick would be train wreck.
Everything that could possibly go wrong, did. Lost my timing chip & goggles in the swim. Had a crash in the first 10k of the bike but managed to stay upright, despite having to go back & collect my hydration system.
Then managed to start vomiting at km 6 of the run, & not hold any food or liquid down for the rest of the race.
Can't quite put my finger on what happened, but I'll have to assume it was poor nutrition both during & before the race.
Pretty beaten up, by far the worst race of my life, on the biggest stage.
I've always said I wanted to race myself into the medical tent. But after being on an emergency drip for nearly an hour, eyes rolling round in my head, surrounded by a team of worried doctors... I'm not sure I want to find myself there ever again. I managed to lose nearly 12% of my body weight, the usual is 5.
I'm pretty disappointed with myself & it'll take me a while to lose the demons I've picked up from this race.
A few positives to be taken though. Swam a 1:13 in slower than usual conditions, cycled a 5:25 with my heart rate at a very low 143bpm. Then managing to make it round to the finish despite not being able to see the pavement at KM 16 was a bonus. Though I wouldn't quite call this one a walking picnic.
Been a very bumpy year for me, but luckily don't think I picked up any injuries in the race. Excited to get my head down through winter, & see what the legs have in store for next year.
