I have been asked many times about my current body of work of synesthesia inspired drawings and paper collages, wholly derived from the free magazines offered to millions of commuters everyday in London.
My response is always, ‘ALL of my work are collages.’ I am indeed a collage, a hybrid human collage. I represent an amalgamation of ancient, modern and contemporary thought and experience – like the Jamaican Jonkunno character ‘Pitchy Patchy’ made up of a myriad of disparate historical and cultural textiles stitched randomly together, creating the contemporary clown, the maverick masquerader, the urban griot, the eternal trickster.
I am a collage. I represent more than colour, more than race, more than heritage, gender, diaspora, and faith. More than the housing estate where I was born and the politics of discrimination that accompanied its architecture.
Look deeper, beyond the surface that shines and reflects, you may notice the glues, the cuts, the hidden layers and the meanings behind the strange juxtapositions. I am no different to these recent collages that represent this explosion of incredibly complex contemporary cultural collisions and how one navigates its vast ocean with infinite wave upon wave of sophisticated messages, suggestive images and corrupt political narratives. All of them competing to be chosen and incorporated, or adopted and assimilated into internal mosaic strips of textile culminating into our very own 21st century Pitchy-Patchy consciousness and individuality.
The image above will always be my finest collage – a hybrid London Patois work in progress, all the way to its inevitable conclusion. You are your very best collage too.
