Sunday we completed our 4th Ironman 70.3! Being less than 4 weeks away from Ironman CDA, it was questionable if it would even be wise to do this race. After many conversations with our coach we decided it was worth the experience to us to do it but we HAD to use it as a very light and controlled training day so it did not interfere with our full race. There was almost 1,000 70.3 athletes out there which was more than double last years numbers. Brandon and I both killed the swim 40:00 minutes for him and 38:50 for me. It was the most chop I have ever swam in. The waves were crashing on top of my head and I got beat up with a few upper cuts to my jaw which really frustrated me. I hung in there and got it done because I knew I deserved to be there and wasn't going to get pushed out. 👊
The bike was a challenge but not in the way you might suspect. We were supposed to keep our max hr % around 70% and that was really really hard to do when I knew I could go faster. The downhills I was able to push hard though and hit a max speed of 45mph and Brandon 46.9mph ....crazy!! 🚴♀️ The run, again we had to hold a much slower pace than we are used to. It was tough to see others in my age group running the pace I wanted to knowing I couldn't but I made a point to stick to the plan for the bigger picture. 😩🏃♀️ Brandon and I got to do the whole bike and run together again and it was so fun seeing our triathlon training team teammates out there as well!
As hard as it was to stay controlled during the race, I can really appreciate it now. The challenge for every athlete, pro or age grouper is to keep themselves in control on the bike and early part of the run so they can have strong fresh legs for the second half of the marathon. Its difficult physically but very draining and challenging mentally to hold back when you KNOW you could go faster and you are feeling great! I'm really glad we had this experience and as defeating as it was in the moment to hold back, I believe this experience will pay me back 10 fold in just 24 days at Ironman CDA!! #imcda #imcanada703 #ironmantraining #momswhotri #triathlontrainingteam
