🗓 Day 64 -📍Kowloon Walled City (Park)! 🌆🙅🏻♂️⚖️👮♂️ This history of this park is truly remarkable, please if you have some time read more about the Kowloon Walled City, you’ll be amazed! I was completely enthralled by its story and this was certainly a highlight of my visit!
Thanks to my brother @vgnbcn for telling me about this unbelievable part of history!
The KWC was a largely-ungoverned densely-populated settlement in Kowloon City in Hong Kong. In 1898 when Hong Kong was handed to British rule for 99 years, KWC had a population of roughly 700.
Over time, the Walled City became a haven for crime, prostitution, gambling and drugs and was a stronghold of the Triads. “Here, prostitutes installed themselves on one side of the street while a priest preached and handed out powdered milk to the poor on the other; social workers gave guidance while drug addicts squatted under the stairs getting high; what were children's games centres by day became strip-show venues by night. It was a very complex place, difficult to generalise about, a place that seemed frightening but where most people continued to lead normal lives. A place just like the rest of Hong Kong.” - Leung Ping-kwan wrote about KWC in his book, City of Darkness.
By 1990, the Walled City contained 50,000 residents within its 26000 Square km borders!
Finally in 1984 the Chinese and British governments decided jointly to demolish the city and build a park on the site. A process finally completely in 1994.
Only one original building still remains today (restored). The Yamen building ⛩ (hiding behind the scale model in picture 1!) To me it is crazy to think that not only was this in Hong Kong, but also less than 25 years ago!
