World War I: 1914-1919
War on the Western Front - The nature of trench warfare and life in the trenches
Life in the trenches could be very different for the soldiers serving on the Western Front. The experiences of soldiers differed based on where they were deployed, what country they came from and what year of the war it was. Boredom was a large part of soldiers experiences in the trenches. Soldiers would rotate between the three lines: the front line, the support line and the reserve line, before enjoying a time of rest. No more than two months a year would typically be spent at rest, with soldiers only able to take leave for a small period of this time. One of the richest sources of information for soldiers experiences of WWI are the letters they sent home to their loved ones. Letters written to help pass the time in the trenches.
